Our health care needs change as we get older. We have some of the world’s leading experts on getting and staying healthy as you age.
Grow Old Gracefully
Many more San Franciscans are facing health issues associated with growing older. The city’s population growth since 2000 has been mostly in the 50 and over age group.
We offer a wide range of services specifically designed with older people in mind. Since many families include at least one elder member, our model of complete and family-focused care – including primary and specialty care, ways to stay active and help with nutrition – can be of great help to seniors and their families.

Getting Back to Your Life
Focus on Independence
Started in 2007, our Acute Care for Elders (ACE) unit takes an interdisciplinary approach to caring for hospitalized older adults. We focus on improving physical and cognitive function so you can return to your life in the community.
Ideal Healing Environment
The 32-room ACE unit with rooftop garden is spacious, airy, and adorned with beautiful stained-glass windows by renowned artist Alan Masaoka in an ideal healing environment. Each morning, patients are seen by their health care team – including UCSF physician, nurse, occupational therapist, pharmacist, social worker – who meet and discuss their care.
- Interdisciplinary care in an ideal healing environment
- Careful medication review to eliminate unnecessary medications
- Non-medication treatments such as exercise, socialization, and sleep hygiene
- Early planning for discharge to home
