ZSFG Seismically Strengthens and Reopens Skilled Nursing Facility

Today, ZSFG celebrated the reopening of its 4A Skilled Nursing Facility in Building 5 after a six-month complex seismic improvement project. The unit reopened with a fresh start—and a new name: The Redwoods. Staff announced the new name at a ribbon cutting event on April 7. The new name reflects the tranquility, strength, and renewal that our 4A SNF provides to patients as they heal and regain independence. The Redwoods continues to be a place of expert, compassionate care, where patients receive specialized medical support on their road to recovery. As we celebrate this milestone, I want to highlight how The Redwoods and the dedicated team there make this essential care possible. Since its opening in 1996, the 4A SNF has been a vital part of SFDPH’s health system, offering specialized care to more than 300 patients a year who need additional medical support before transitioning back to independent living. With an average length of stay of 32 days, 4A SNF provides critical post-acute skilled care, helping to free up hospital beds and improve patient flow through ZSFG’s care areas, and ultimately, to recovery. The ZSFG team has specialized training to provide comprehensive services for complex medical conditions such as wound care and rehabilitation. Their work is widely recognized—U.S. News & World Report recently named them one of the best short-term rehabilitation facilities for 2025, awarding the unit a 5-star rating and High Performing designation based on exceptional patient outcomes, low rates of falls, infections, and ED visits, and strong nursing staff ratios. Appreciation and congratulations to the teams at ZSFG that made this milestone possible including the 4A staff and leadership, Capital Planning and Facilities Services.
