Today, ZSFG participated in “SEISMIC SURGE” – a functional disaster exercise organized by SFDPH’s Emergency Preparedness Branch. Exercises such as these are an opportunity for teams to come together to test processes and strengthen emergency response to better prepare for disasters. The exercise involved key medical response partners including 10 hospitals, Laguna Honda, DPH, and San Francisco’s EMS Agency. “SEISMIC SURGE” was based on an earthquake scenario and tested the hospital’s ability to identify bed space, personnel, and medical supplies needed to care for disaster patients received, in addition to existing patients. The exercise was successful and reaffirmed that many incidents happen when they’re least expected. ZSFG recognizes the need to shift focus to off hours/weekend training and drills to ensure other teams/leaders have the same opportunities to learn emergency preparedness. An after-action survey and report are currently being reviewed for continuous improvement.
